Digital Sharing for Apple Users: A Take Control Crash Course (2014)

Send Radio Stations to Others

In the previous chapter, I admitted to not playing games. In this one, I must confess another anomaly: I don’t listen to the radio. It’s just a habit I never acquired—that goes for both conventional and Internet-based radio. When I want to listen to music, I choose something from my extensive iTunes library rather than hoping a DJ or curator randomly picks something I might like. What a weirdo, right?

Anyway, pretty much everyone else I know does listen to the radio, and many of my friends are particularly fond of Internet “radio” services such as iTunes Radio, Pandora, Spotify, Rdio, and Beats Music. Services like these typically let you create customized “stations” that play music based on your personal tastes. If you think your friends might like to listen to the same music, you can share (that is, send) your stations to them. Here’s a quick summary of how to do that with each major service.

Sharing an iTunes Radio Station

1. Click a custom station to select it. A panel opens below the station with more details.

2. Click the Share button.

3. Choose a sharing method from the pop-up menu .

Sharing a Pandora Station

1. From the Pandora Web site, click the Share button.

2. In the dialog that appears, make sure Station is selected.

3. Enter a note.

4. Optionally select Facebook and/or Twitter if you want to post to those networks.

5. Click Share to share with your followers and any networks you selected in Step 4. Or, click Email Instead, enter one or more email addresses, and click Share to email the station.

For other ways to share, see Sharing on Pandora.

Sharing from Spotify

In the Spotify Mac app, you can listen to prebuilt genre radio stations or create your own based on an artist or album. (You can also create radio stations based on playlists, but those can’t currently be shared.)

To share an artist- or album-based radio station, single track, or playlist:

1. Right-click (or Control-click) the name of the station or other item.

2. From the contextual menu, choose Share.

3. Enter a note.

4. Select the Facebook, Twitter, and/or Tumblr icons if you want to post to those networks.

5. Click Share to share with your followers and any networks you selected in Step 4.

Or, click Send to, enter a friend’s name, and click Send to send the music to that friend.

Sharing from Rdio

Rdio lets you make playlists or listen to prebuilt stations. You have only one personal “FM” station, based on the music and artists you’ve designated as favorites. You can’t explicitly share your personal FM station, but if you have a public profile, any other Rdio user who views your profile can see your station and click Start Station to hear it.

You can, however, share a playlist. With the playlist open, click the Share button, fill in the form, and click Send—or simply copy the URL from the top of the form and send it manually.

Sharing from Beats Music

Beats Music, now owned by Apple, lets you share tracks, albums, and playlists—but it doesn’t have shareable stations as such. To share the content you’re currently viewing in the Beats Web app:

1. Click the Share icon (if you don’t see it, click the ellipsis icon first).

2. Enter a note.

3. Click Post to share to your Beats feed, or click the Facebook or Twitter icon to share on that network.
