Band-Aids and Salve for Your Mind (or First Aid Supplies)

One of the first things to go in your backpack should be a first aid kit. You will need ointment and Band-Aids for scratches and cuts. How does this relate to email? Email can deliver scratches and small cuts all day long, which leave you needing mental and emotional band-aids. When you receive a cryptic, sarcastic or downright ugly email, you need to apply a good dose of mental and emotional suave and Band-Aids.

The downside to email is tone. You can’t hear the tone of someone’s voice and you can’t see their body language. This means you may interpret a statement as hurtful when the sender meant it to be funny. You miss the humorous sarcasm because you don’t hear the tone and see the body language.

Apply salve and Band-Aids, and give the sender the benefit of the doubt. Don’t let today’s productivity be stopped by negative thoughts about the sender and don’t spend time calculating how to get even with them.
